I agree with your plea for optimism. As a society, and indeed as individuals, we have the opportunity to be a force in this world. Whether that is a negative or positive force is really up to that community or individual. There is a choice, I believe, and I am definitely in favor of advancement, betterment, and achievement.
However, I believe that the amount of actual influence an individual has, especially on the global scale, is restricted to only a handful of people. Therefore, an individual, however optimistic and idealistic as they may be, cannot battle against the forces that are greater than them.
Furthermore, it is relevant to take note of substantiated evidence about patterns. Every science, and indeed our own human existence, is based on laws. There are causes and there are reactions. In the case that an occurrence happens to be similar to a previous one, there is reason to believe that a similar reaction will take place. This is inference, not pessimism.
Therefore, even though I agree with you that the party would be better if everyone sat at the same table, the only way of actually embodying the dedication you talk about would be to be committed enough to physically knock the legs off the table if everyone can’t sit AND wield the kind of influence that can make a difference. Currently, only the card-carrying members of the Bush Administration have the position to do this so one only needs to look at THEIR positions on the issues to understand what fate will be imposed on us. I agree that we can control our own destinies, but it will always be limited by those that hold more power.
