It's not unusual to see the pursuit of education stifled. Many in history who were brilliant but threatening the normal social order or political regime were eventually was locked up or put to death by the government. Look at Socrates.

In the present situation, large media outlets see the dominant political ideological makeup of our country and take it as a testament to the "right" way of thinking. Therefore, any liberal, progressive or otherwise fringe ideas should basically be eliminated because they are "wrong." Fortunately, the universities don't share this view and continue their liberal bias -which is a direct influence of education.
